Building better bridges between research and national security

A Soaring Leader essay on practical leadership for mission-focused organizations.

WSRC reported that General Zadalis would support national security initiatives and U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force partnerships at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The leadership lesson is practical: partnerships work when mission needs are clear, trust is built deliberately, and research is translated into operationally useful outcomes.

Useful collaboration starts with shared language. Research organizations need to understand real mission constraints; mission-focused agencies need pathways for ideas to be tested, refined, and adopted responsibly.

Leaders can strengthen these bridges by clarifying the problem, protecting trust, assigning owners, and measuring whether the work improves readiness or decision-making.
